- Byrnes to attend 11th World Harp Congress in Vancouver, BC.
Garrett Byrnes will be attending
the 11th World Harp Congress in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada in
July, 2011. The harp congress takes place from the 24th - 30th,
and Byrnes will take part in a discussion panel on July 26th with other
composers who write music for the harp. He will also attend a
special concert for his late friend, the Turkish harpist Ceren
Necipoğlu on the 29th. The concert will feature an assortment of
harpists performing repertoire that Necipoğlu had performed in her last
concerts. The concert will include Dutch harpist Lavinia Meijer
performing Byrnes' Amhrán Slán (written for Necipoğlu in 2001) and Turkish harpist Şirin
Pancaroǧlu giving the premiere of Byrnes' new solo work Valley of Butterflies.
Just days before her tragic death in 2009,
Necipoğlu
asked Byrnes if he would compose a new work that she could premiere at the next World Harp
Congress. Valley of Butterflies will be given its
premiere in Ceren's memory by her friend and colleague Şirin
Pancaroǧlu.
Information regarding the 11th World Harp Congress can be found on the organizations website.
